Mounting pressure to reduce sewage spills combined with increasing extreme weather events, means that water companies are facing a multitude of challenges. Consequently, with legislative changes demonstrating a continent-wide drive to improve water quality across the EU, there has never been a better opportunity to innovate and improve your wastewater system.
Research released in 2023 showed that only 42% of Europe’s 1.7 million kilometres of freshwater courses have a good ecological status. This is attributed to a range of factors such as agricultural run-off, industrial pollution and the use of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) from municipal wastewater facilities.
Whilst the issue of CSOs attracts much more press coverage in the UK than it does in the EU, the generally poor quality of freshwater across the continent has prompted legislative action from the European Council.
Furthermore, with extreme weather the new norm, municipal water facilities must take steps to ensure current targets can be exceeded and reliance on CSOs is reduced.
As such, our specialist knowledge and suite of industry leading water treatment technologies means a partnership with us can have real value – as we are ideally positioned to find you an effective solution when it comes to meeting your obligations. Here’s an overview of just some of the options that have the potential to make a lasting, and positive, change to operations.
Hubgrade Waste Plant Performance
Hubgrade Waste Plant Performance (HWP) is our smart digital real time control system that can be adapted for use on a single piece of technology or an entire WWTP or sewage network. Through the creation of a detailed digital twin and real time control, Hubgrade uses real time data, flow and storm forecasting to communicate optimised set points to the network and WWTP. Hubgrade also provides live updates about a system, aiding plant operators in the identification of issues or potential failures before they can have a widespread impact. This enables operators to take a proactive, data-driven approach that provides valuable insights.. By incorporating HWP, wastewater facilities can take a less reactive approach to system and asset management to help futureproof the industry.
ACTIFLO®
In terms of technology, our ACTIFLO® clarification system can be easily implemented to optimise your wastewater facility and decrease the use of CSOs. This range of high-rate clarification units are four to eight times smaller than DAF units, and fifty times smaller than conventional clarification units of a similar capacity.
This means ACTIFLO® is the ideal solution for upgrading an existing plant as its efficient, microsand ballasted flocculation process increases the through flow of effluent during an extreme weather event but also requires a minimum amount of space. When combined with Hubgrade, customers have also been able to reduce chemical usage by 50%, resulting in both environmental and OPEX benefits.
HYDROTECH™ Discfilter
The HYDROTECH™ Discfilter optimises effluent treatment with a small footprint. The Discfilter is proven to remove TSS and Phosphorous levels <0.25Tp.
AnoxKaldnes™ Moving Bed Biological Reactor (MBBR)
Biological treatment should also be part of the process for treating wastewater from CSOs, in order to meet ammonia and biological oxygen demand (BOD) discharge requirements. Our AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR is a biological solution that uses plastic biofilm carriers with a large surface area for optimal microbial growth. These carriers are suspended and circulated in a wastewater tank to encourage the biological breakdown of BOD and ammonia, all whilst maintaining a small footprint.
